Lauxaniidae - ID please

This is a small fly - smaller than 5mm. It is from my garden in South Africa. Can somebody please help with an ID?

Thank you Paul. I had a look at the gallery and it looks very similar to the Lauxaniidae Pachycerina seticornis. |

Hi, yes, it is very simillar to P. seticornis, so it is probably some Lauxanid, unfortunatelly i know only European fauna. katka |

The resemblence with Pachycerina is why I suggested Lauxaniidae.

This is not only similar to Pachycerina, it IS in the genus Pachycerina! A very very nice photo!! I hope you have the specimen or specimens! In any case, it is not any of the Pachycerina described from the Afrotropics - the most similar appears to be P. vaga Adams from "Rhodesia" (=Zambia, Malawi or Zimbabwe) and Tanzania, but it disagrees with several characteristics of that species. The other species are from the Seychelles and Mauritius. Non-Afrotropical species are described from Europe (of course - P. seticornis and P. pulchra) as well as India and Southeast Asia. Very likely an undescribed species. |
