Dear all,

Can anybody tell me the name of this fly or is it not a fly? It looked very flat and plastically and unfortunately he was not willing to sit stil. Therefore the picuture is of poor quality. But maybe someone stil can ID it?

Thanks.

Gr,
Shar.

Hello,
Definitely a soldier fly (Stratiomyidae). I can't go further, though.

It is a soldier fly (Stratiomyidae). With this colour I'd go for Odontomyia ornata but my experience with Odontomyia is not very big, so some confirmation is welcome.

It really looks like O. ornata, but this species is very rare in Sweden. It likes warmer climate and you can find it very frequently in Hungary or southern France.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
