Hi Gordon, it is a Microchrysa. Stratiomyidae are not my cup of tea, but I dare to say it is probably M. cyaneiventris.

Oriental species? Then not cyaneiventris (looks very suspicious for that species with those very pale legs).

Paul, I've no idea where the photo was taken, my website was recently resold and the new owner did a lot of improvements, in cluding some new, and poorly identified images from who knows where. So it could be from Mars for all I know.

I have removed the image of this fly. It turns out to be a fly picture from shutterstock. I doubt I can be used without payment. The photographer is Thai by the way so it will be an oriental one.

Sorry I have been away so long. Paul you needn't have worried, the fly image is paid for, licensed to be used on my website, I was just trying to get it identified. My partner bought it before I rejoined the site, but he assure me it has been paid for.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
