I assume this fly is a blow fly in the family Calliphoridae. Anyone know the possible genus? Photographed in Juneau, Alaska on August 22, 2013 -- lots of salmon carcasses in the area.

Thanks,

Bob

Maybe Lucilia illustris. Most of the species with two postsutural acrostichal bristles like warmer climates.

Thanks John -- I am slowly beginning to understand the connections between salmon carcasses and pollinators.

I would suggest using this key, which is online and has images to boot.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
