I think the male (top) might be Lordiphosa - is it possible to say which one? Is the female (below) the same species, or somethign else entirely (I think she's a drosophilid!). For scale, the long edge of the photo is exactly 1cm,

Sorry the photos are not great, and one angle only - I was in a big hurray before they woke up!

I do still have the flies (alive), and may be able to take better photos, if they survive the enxt 4 days while I'm away!

The male is L. fenestrarum. The female is also Lordiphosa, looks more like L. andalusiaca, but still better picture of abdominal end (if possible) is needed for precise determination.

Fantastic! Thank you! Annoyingly I lost the female when transfering her to a new tube :o(

They were both on the same courgette, so my suspicion is that they're the same species, unless the drosophilid fauna in my veg patch is hyper-diverse! I'll try to catch some more when I'm back home at the end of the week.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
