This specimen was collected the 9th of September on a dead rabbit in Rilland, the Netherlands. Any ideas on the species?

Unfortunately your pictures are to poor for me for a clear determination. Based on its typical coloration of legs I would say that it is a female of Liopiophila varipes (or Prochyliza (Liopiophila) varipes, or Prochyliza varipes, or Liopiophila (Prochyliza) varipes). I have no source for a clear generic placement.

Hi Niels-Jan & Xylosoma,

The colour of the legs is highly variable within species of Piophilidae and quite similar between several species. And the thorax is laterally black, not yellow as seems on the photo.
Nevertheless, after examining the specimen, it is Liopiophila varipes. Its still Liopiophila, according to the latest phylogenteic study; Rochefort 2016 (off the top of my head...).

Kind regards,
Ectemnius

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
