Hello!

This tiny (4 mm) fly rested at the wall of our house yesterday (northwest Germany). Muscid or Anthomyiid? Thanks!

Don't think it is an anthomyiid. Bristling of hind tibia suggests Trichops, Muscidae or similar

Thanks! Then it's one of the smallest Muscids I've seen, yet.
Best regards,
Jürgen

Dear Juergen

I've changed my mind! I now am sure it is a male of Lasiomma strigilatum Zett. (Anthomyiidae). The hind tibia are as in this species, and I think (?) I can see some pale hairs on the eyes, which this species has. Also two pale vitta just behind the head, not running past the suture. L. strigilatum breeds in bird nests, and is common early in the season.

Thanks a lot! Now one of the few Anthomyiids in my photo collection that receives a name. Smile
Best regards,
Jürgen

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
