I caught this in my garden, Menai Bridge, North Wales, 23 Jan. 2013. I'm hoping it is Heteromyza commixta. That is what it comes to using Collin (1943). But if H. atricornis has sneaked onto the British list via Roger Thomason's Shetland photos, I'm not clear how to separate these two.

Gorodkov (1988) said

male frons anteriorly tapered only slightly: H. atricornis
male frons anteriorly tapered gradually: H. rotundicornis & commixta

but I'm not sure what this difference would look like.

Can anyone help, please? The specimen is in alcohol so the colours are sharper than in life.

Four pairs of dorso-centrals, one pair in front of the suture. You'll have to take my word for it.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
