Hi, When I saw the nice pic of the courtship of Hercostomus germanus in the gallery I remembered that I had seen a similar funny behaviour in Tyrol, Austria (Niederthai, 1.650 m) in August, 2010. The male was up in the air in close vicinity of another male, however. A female was also present. Is this behaviour typical for Hercostomus germanus and thus an ID help, or do my flies belong to another taxon? Thanks for help, Sundew Here are the males: Sundew attached the following image: [165.62Kb] Edited by Sundew on 19-09-2011 12:30 |

It is Hercostomus and I think many species of the genus have the same nuptial behaviour. It also loks like H. germanus.

Many thanks, Igor - so Hercostomus cf. germanus should be ok. |
