7.5 mm, coniferous woodland, eastern England, July 2012

Meron and prosternum bare

eyes closely approximated, orbitals absent

radial node bare

sternites shining black

setae on sternites longer than segments

sternites shorter than broad

however the cercal plate doesn't look right, being rounded before a short, parallel-sided neck

Any wisdom here appreciated!

Hi,
Helina setiventris is correct for me. The figure in Gregor et al. is not the best. I attach Hennig's drawing for comparison :

Thank you Stephane. That's a better figure in as much as the distal end is parallel sided even if the widening is still more obtuse. It went very easily to setiventris otherwise and given the good match with the key features I am glad that you agree with this identification.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
