Dear visitors,

Yesterday 30.4.07 I saw this quite big ( more than 13 mm)fly sitting on a leaf in the last sunshine in the eastern part of Austria.
But after the first photo shot it disappeared .
It was jetblack and bright red.
I have never seen such a fly before.
Can You please help me to identify.
Thank You

Margarita Auer

Clitellaria ephippium (Stratiomyidae) female. Larva is found in Lasius fuliginosus nests. I don't know its status in Austria, but it is apparently extinct in Britain - now seen only in the wildest dreams of hallucinating dipterists. Sad Wow! Wow! and again Wow!

It was considered extinct in the Netherlands as well, but it has turned up over the past 10-15 years...

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
