Hi,
This small Syrphid sat on a yellow tulip yesterday. Can it be identified?
Thanks, Sundew

Hi Sundew,

a Cheilosia female. Any identification beyond this wouldn't be more than a guess.

Cheers,
Dieter

Aha - so the nice leg colouration isn't helpful in this case...
Well, a genus is better than nothing (even if it's a big one).

The legs would be unusually extensively yellow for a vernalis group specimen. Further, the abdomen seems to be rather slender. A more likely guess would be a species of the urbana group.

The slenderness of the abdomen might be due to the fact that she is just shitting! Afterwards the abdomen looked much shorter and rounded... Grin

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
