Hello,

yesterday I found on a inland dune in Berlin a fly with orange legs.
Who can help me to determine the species?

Nice to hear from you, but with a pic would still be nicer!

Sure, a nice one! Syrphidae, Chalcosyrphus spec. (compare mine in http://www.dipter...d_id=48510). Yours seems to be less hairy on the legs, so perhaps another species. Let us wait for the Syrphidologists Grin.

Thank you for specifying the genus. Now I have checked the "StN KEYS FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF ADULT EUROPEAN SYRPHIDAE". If my photo shows a female, than this is Chalcosyrphus valgus. On another photo you can see the dark brown haltere knob.

Thanks for the most valuable key! On the one hand, it enables us to ID not referring mainly to jizz. On the other hand, one learns how many important characters can hardly be seen in a photograph...

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
