Hello,

I photographed this fly in my garden today. The size was approximately 6-7 mm? Does it belong to the genus Tachinidae or to another genus? Is it possible to identify the species?

Greetings, Volker

Hello Volker, I think it's a male Bellardia - quite likely a B. viarum.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your answer. Then it is not a tachinid but a blowfly. Should I write spec. or can you distinguish B. viarum from B. obsoleta, B. pandia, B. vespillo and B. vulgaris on the basis of my pictures?

Greetings, Volker

Cell R4+5 is open: excludes polita and obsoleta
Lower calypter is dark: excludes vespillo
Fore tibia has 1 pv bristle: excludes usually pandia

Veins are very dark and tergite 4 has many discals: usually excludes vulgaris

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
