Hello,
is this a Brachypalpus, maybe B. valgus?
Found today and yesterday (24-03-2017, 25-03-2017) on Willow (Salix) in the Elbe River floodplains, Lower Saxony (first two photos one individual, photos 3 and 4 another individual).
(there was no comment in the main forum, so I try again here. Additional photos here: https://diptera.i...d_id=78530)
best wishes, Jann

I think you are right. Brachypalpus laphriformis has a dark arista, while B. valgus has a white one. Chalcosyrphus eunotus is also similar, however, it has a dull thoraic dorsum, while your specimen has a shiny one.

On top of that, B. valgus is a spring species, Chalcosyrphus eunotus is not.

Thank you very much, treebeard! Also for your explanations concerning the differences to similar species.
