Hi,
Two days ago I saw this lovely Syrphid in Southern Brandenburg. The only match is Chalcosyrphus valgus, though the gallery animals show a bit more reddish legs. Can this species be confirmed, and how is the correct name in use? I read that C. valgus is a synonym of C. femoratus; however, the gallery animals are named C. valgus.
Many thanks for help, Sundew

Yep, it does, because it looks like a male Chalcosyrphus femoratus, which is not the same as Chalcosyrphus valgus. An older name for this species used to be Chalcosyrphus curvipes.... Great find!!

Thank you, dear Gerard, that you found time at last to look at this beauty. It will go straight to the gallery!

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
