I would say this is Ochlerotatus caspius (= Aedes caspius)

Thank you, Tony. It doesn't seem to have very British records, but perhaps mosquitoes aren't a popular field of study!

Not as popular as hoverflies, but there are a number of people trying to extend our knowledge of where they occur. If you can give me a grid reference for the photo, we can add this one to the map. Unfortunately they can't all be identified from photos, but this is one of the more distinctive species.
