Hello,

This small black fly with a glossy body, large head, and yellowish wings was tentatively identified as Dasiops on the French forum Le Monde des Insectes.

Given the general appearance and the tarsal coloration, I was wondering whether Dasiops ensifer could be a candidate. This older post on Le Monde des Insectes shows a very similar specimen, identified by Iain MacGowan as Dasiops ensifer.

Do you think it's possible to go further, at least to species level, based on these photos?

Hi
Yes this is a female Dasiops - either D. latifrons or D. ensifer both of which could occur in the western Mediterranean area. I am afraid I cant tell which species this is from these photos - they are very similar species and best studied under a microscope
