Chloropidae, Oscinellinae, Oscinisoma Lioy, 1864 [frequently misspelled as the unjustified emendation Oscinosoma Enderlein, 1911]. In Europe three species are occurring which cannot easily be identified, male genitalia must be studied: O. cognatum, O. germanicum, and O. gilvipes. All those live below litter and rotten plant debris on wet ground, especially in bogs and fens. They hibernate as flies similar to Elachiptera species. Old bird nests are a preferred shelter. Larvae develop in shoots and behind leaves of monocot plants, e.g. Glyceria maxima. The rugous thorax is slightly depressed with acrostichals not arranged in rows. Partly specimens have slightly shortened wings. The generic name is neuter (to soma, ancient Greek for belly). |
