Same general area as Rhinia posted previously - http://www.diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=44421&highlight=Rhinia&pid=194270#post_194270 - not conclusively identified, but looks very close to R. apicalis. Location: Chongwe District, Lusaka, Zambia. Habitat: Thicket of (non-native) mexican daisies, in recently burnt orchard. Date: 27/02/2013 Size: small, probably 6mm or thereabouts. I would say Rhinia, too. Dunno any species, though.

Thanks Paul - I'll remove the question mark from the title, and from the file. Nice to know that I was heading in the right direction... |

So, according to the Biosystematic Database of World Diptera, there are only three species of Rhinia it could be - the rest are either oriental, island races or recently described from Morocco (belletiella, which therefore could, in theory, be more widespread). So, out of Rhinia apicalis, Rhinia coxendix and Rhinia nigricornis, can anyone eliminate? |
