Hi, There are no photos of Phaonia valida males in the gallery, but there are 6 females! I have photos from last year of a female, is this the male? 28th June, on my wall near Lincoln UK. Janet blowave attached the following image: [110.14Kb] http://cubits.org... |

Sorry, I tried to reply yesterday but the site crashed down. This is more likely Phaonia errans, for these reasons : vein M1+2 not slightly bent apically like it should be for valida, all occipital hairs black (should be partly reddish on lower part in valida), antennae wholly black (1st flagellomere partly reddish in valida). Phaonian valida is also larger than P. errans. Usually, the male of Phaonia errans fore femora are darkened, this could be misleading.

Oh goodness gracious me, I have uploaded photos for the gallery as P. valida! Thank you Stephane, I guess the front femora colour is not as important as the other details? http://cubits.org... |

Stephane, if you're sure this is Phaonia errans then I will ask Paul to change the name as it's gone in the gallery. Otherwise I could maybe put a note under the photo, which would you advise to do?

Well, it has two things going for P. valida. I think it was quite big, and the front femora are very orange!
