This fly was in my moth trap this morning. It looks like some kind of Bibio to me. Is it possible to identify it to species? It was quite tiny compared to the bigger Bibio species. Many thanks, Stephen Plummer. Ampthill, Bedfordshire, UK. Stephen Plummer attached the following image: ![]() [163.15Kb] Edited by Stephen Plummer on 08-04-2011 15:16 |

Yes, it looks like a Bibio, doesn't it ? Very black pterostigma and all black hairs (we can't see the abdomen, but those on thorax are clearly black) indicates B. johannis. This is is earliest common spring species. Stephen, please realize that this Bibio is not small, but that marci is big ! Most Bibio's are this size or just slightly larger. In case of all blonde / yelllow hairs and lighter stigma: B. lanigerus Theo |
