It's nice to see a clear photo of the male hind tarsal "claw". I find plenty of females of this, yet to turn up any males.

Are there any suggestion of the use of the claw. I would guess something to do with mating, but if so, How?

Wow, thanks Ruud! It's a notable species too!

Mark, does the female have dark antennae tips too? I have been seeing a few different little orange flies so might come across it.

It didn't hang around for long so I was lucky to get that clear claw shot!

One for the gallery! Grin

I don't know anything about sadomachosism in the diptera world, but if there is, the females Aulogastromyia have a strange taste.

Yes, the females have similar antennae. The abdomen of the female is also most peculiar. The 7th sternit and tergit are huge.

That is a good photo of the female, although it wasn't given as a definite ID if that is correct it would have been good for the gallery!

I did get pics of one in the late, even duller hours today which has quite a broad end to it but it didn't have black on the antennae! Post that one later..Grin

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
