Hi This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful flies in Europe. I found 3 Myopa picta today in the same place where I found in last year the Myopa ... this year I spotted it more early. That's a gorgeous species, certainly qualifies to be greater than 600px wide. I especially like #2. Supposedly 14 widespread spp. of Myopa in NA - hope there are some up my way. Edited by Tony T on 06-04-2008 21:51 |

Pierre. It is a mpe-65 mm. There is no mpe-150mm. Tony, I'm eager to see those Myopa from Canada.  I love this genus in Conopidae! Nigel, yes, I will do that. Today I tried to find more Myopa picta but they are hard to spot. I will try in next weekend.

Jorge, A good way to find Myopa (at least in the UK) is to sweep the flowers of spring flowering trees, particularly Crataegus monogya, or probably any similar tree. A long handled net is helpful. Do lots of sweeping and you should get some specimens. Nigel Jones, Shrewsbury, United Kingdom |

Nice fly, Tony. I'm eager to see other Myopa too. Nigel, thanks for the tip. In the place I spotted only one Crataegus.. I know that Cynara sp. could be a good place to find tephritids and conopids, but this plant is rare in Viseu. Mentha flowers are very good to find conopids! |

That is actually good news. That one Crataegus could be a magnet, attracting many flies from all around - it would certainly be worth sweeping that tree.

As long as the tree has flowers on it. They will not be out for some weeks in the UK yet. Are they in flower in Portugal?
