Does anyone recognize this species? This small fly was observed on a Xanthium leaf in a river channel near Salinas, California on August 29.

Hi Oliver.
My test it looks as Chamaemyiidae.
Some characters disagree with Palearctic Chamaemyiidae, but may be it is OK for Calliphornian...

No Chamaemyiidae, but I cannot tell what family off hand. No time to dig into the big books atm. Wink

I did dig into books. Results:
1. I have to agree that it isn't Chamaemyiidae.
2. I didn't find any siutable family for this fly.
3. I'll met New Year very much thrilled due to this flyShock

What an excellent little fly! I'm pretty sure it is a muscid, specifically Coenosiinae. I think you will find the answer in that subfamily.

I was thinking about a calyptrate fly but the calypter appeared rather smallish to me. Wink

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I know it's aggravating to try to ID someting with only a photo. Maybe I'll run into one of these again next year and be able to collect a sample and get it under the scope.

Happy New Year.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
