August 04, 2010, Naro-Fominsk, Moscow region, Russia. I spotted these flies in many places on the Nara river, but was unable to reach them from the shore. Finally I have found a place with a lot of water lilies and firm bottom (unlike silt elsewhere). So I plunged into the water and quickly collected a fair number of specimens (22 males and 18 females as I discovered later). I returned there in an hour with my camera (despite tropical heat and dense smoke from forest fires everywhere) and was back in the water hoping to make some good shots (and not to drown my equipment). Size of males (top) 7 to 9 mm, females (bottom) ranging from 7 to 10 mm, the latter more uniform in size.

While others can't climb, using infinite pains,
I, gravity turning to jest,
Ascend, with all ease, perpendicular planes,
Rough or smooth, just as pleases me best.

Habitat.
Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of the whole scene like Joke van Erkelens has, but I'm afraid my pictures would be rated 18+ with a nude male model (almost chin-deep in the water, though).

Nice photos
Looked today also again...only collected 3 species.
They seem to be at special places, not everywhere around on water lilies.

Don't forget to add these to the gallery - no photos of this species are on the gallery yet and I suspect that it's rarely photographed in life.
