These were shot in May of 2003 in the garden of my parent's house. Country side in the middle of Portugal when looking at the map. (most of my photos are made there, although I live in Lisbon) I'm not sure they are the same species, but there were several of them standing on the sun and picking at eachother's. The body was about 10-12mm long, bigger than a house-fly. But could it be Muscidae anyway? digitalg attached the following image: [49.24Kb] Edited by digitalg on 04-08-2006 16:29 Armando Frazão http://bugs.digit... |

Hi Armando They look very like Calliphora vicina (Calliphoridae). The first one is a male, the second a female. If you had some shots of the abdomen, I'm sure you would see the metallic blue reflections that give these flies their English name of "bluebottles". There were no blue reflection, I'm pretty sure of it. In fact I've been looking at those same flies a couple of days ago on the very same spot (also took some shoots but can't show them yet, still running on film!) and no blue! I have just another shoot of the same male that I'm posting here, but i guess it is of no great help. But blue reflections there are in this new thread I've just started: http://www.dipter...ad_id=2800 But the fly at this other thread is a little bigger, 'bulkier' and the abdomen is considerably broader. digitalg attached the following image: [52.68Kb] Armando Frazão http://bugs.digit... |
