From July 2009 what I think is a Tephritis sp. Photos taken in Reading UK, on 2009-07-21 and 2009-07-26. No obvious host plants - it was on the window of a 2nd floor flat that is surrounded by horse chestnut trees and lawns. Initially I thought it might be T. matricariae (which seems to have colonized SE England in the past decade) but now I think the wing patterns don't look quite right for that. So then I thought maybe T. praecox but that seems to be quite rare in England. Now I am just confused. tristram attached the following image: ![]() [103.36Kb] Edited by tristram on 23-11-2011 18:44 |

Indeed. Not too much unexpected: this species has been listed for the UK (White 1988).

Thankyou Saeed and Valery! (What I meant by T. praecox being 'rare' was it appears in only 6 10-km squares on Laurence Clemon's 2008 Updated Distribution Maps of the Tephritidae (Diptera) of Britain and Ireland, whereas T. matricariae appears in 44.) Edited by tristram on 23-11-2011 18:39 |
