David Lester added a genus-level ID of Hybomitra, and suggested posting here. Location: TL 229 844. It was basking in low vegetation on a path bordering the Great Raveley Drain.

Thank you very much! I have come to the invertebrate world far too late in life - things are harder to take in, worse to actually remember! But when you see as striking a fly as this, it cries out to be photographed and admired.
