Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Interesting Fly on Flower

I photographed this nice fly in May of 1990 and it would be nice to finally get a caption on it. Can anyone supply an ID?

Location was West Virginia, USA.

It's a syrphid fly, possibly Cheilosia but one of the others here can probably tell you more.

Thanks for the help, Paul, and thanks for the suggestion, Andre. I did send the image to Chris Thompson and he was kind enough to comment:

"Without being able to clearly see the face in lateral view, etc., it is difficult to identify these bare-eyed [=Cartosyrphus] Cheilosia species. However, the collecting date, locality and overall habitus makes it highly probable to be C. pallipes."
