Hello,

yesterday on a meadow near a forest (northwest Germany) I encountered my second Cylindromyia ever. Unfortunately the photos are not very good, but better than those of my first one. Every time I tried to get near to take a picture with the macro lens, the fly flew off and landed on the next marguerite two meters away... :| The fly measured about 10 mm. Is it possible to tell the species (or group of species)? I'm afraid, not...

Hi Juergen, should be C. brassicaria.

Cheers, Eric

Brassicaria is very hard to tell from brevicornis in pictures.
In females, you can assess the number of marginal bristles on the fourth (apperent third) segment): 4 in brassicaria, 6 in brevicornis. In brassicaria, the strict laterals are lacking, as well shown in the first pic. So brassicaria it is.

There has been a serious influx of C. brassicaria in NL and B this summer, soon to be published in Nederlandse Faunistische Mededelingen.
