I don't know that, John. I never paid attention to diptera in the States. I always focused on birds. I love the Cardinal and the hummingbirds are too sweet. The catbirds and Towhees always make me smile.

Yes , Nyctia halterata, the classic pseudo-Rhinophorid.
Note the strong fold to bend in vein M, never present in (European) Rhinophoridae with open topcell.
