Hi,
this relatively big and brightly coloured fly has been attracted by the flowers of an Euonimus on our balcony near Bologna, Italy on June 24, 2019. From its flight (standing still in the air for a moment) I guess it might be a Syrphid, but as it is holding its wings closed when posed, I cannot check the veins.
When flying it looks surprisingly similar to an Anthidium bee which appeared more or less in the same period.
Can you please help me to identify it - thanks a lot.
Franziska

Stratiomyidae, Odontomyia sp.

Thanks a lot Carlo! (I had not thought at all of Stratiomyidae)
Running an image search I noted my specimen looks quite like O. annulata. Are there other species it might be confused with? (I saw that in O. flavissima the tip of the abdomen is black not yellow)
Kind regards
Franziska

Odontomyia annulata, ornata should have a blunt apex to the antennae, in this one it is pointed.
