I am still struggling to differentiate Fanniidae from Muscidae. So what is this female? A Hydrotaea, a Fannia, s.th. else? Seen in a park in Vienna, mid of May

Not a Hydrotaea. Fanniidae, almost all Anthomyiidae, and some Muscidae have 2+3 pairs of dorsocentrals. Most Muscidae have 2+4, including Hydrotaea.

Thanks John, some helpful hints! I am usually looking for the anal veins, which are more often than not hard to see clearly.

Also, the usually pale parafrontal strips of female Fannia are broadest in the middle, not parallel sided.
