Hi,
is it possible to ID this fly based on its genital morphology?
Found in march in a park in Vienna (he was mating, but couldn't catch his partner)

Well, you are of course right. I was too focused on the antenna. Changed the title from Sphaeroc. to Phorid.

I agree that the antennae of the two families are very easy to confuse with one another. Fortunately, your dorsal photo shows the wing venation beautifully.
