Hi,

I would like to identify this small fly photographed on October, 12th.
Deciduous forest, 20km west of Paris.
Length about 4-5mm.
Any idea?
Thanks for help,
FRV

Hi FRV,

A male Acartophthalmus nigrinus of the family Acartophthalmidae. Four species and one genus in the entire family. Three species in Europe, where two are quite common. A. bicolor in summer on carcasses of mammals in shaded forests. A. nigrinus in autumn on rotting mushrooms in shaded forests. The third European species, A. pusio, is very rare and to my knlowedge has a boreo-montane distribution.
Btw, a very nice photo!

Kind regards,

Ectemnius
