Hi,
Eleven years ago I posted a female
Rhamphomyia with broad dark wings and feathery legs (
https://diptera.i...ad_id=9143). The pictures were bad, as I used my son's small pocket camera at that time. Paul suggested
Rhamphomyia erythrophthalma, but the pictures I found in the internet looked rather different to me.
On 11. September 2014 I saw the fly again and got somewhat better pictures. So I would like to show it again, because it is a quite impressive fly. Couldn't it belong in subgenus
Pararhamphomyia? Any ideas?

It seems this poor female is a difficult case! With Hackston’s key (
https://sites.goo.../empididae) it was rather easy to get to subgenus
Pararhamphomyia, but then the trouble begins... I cannot decide whether there is a single or a double row of dorsocentrals. I tried the
Pararhamphomyia key by Frey (1922,
https://core.ac.u...922836.pdf) in all directions but could not find a character combination of
- 1st and 2nd antennal segment yellow, legs yellow, halteres pale
- thorax grey, abdomen dark
- wings dark, broadened
- hind tibiae distinctly pennate, hind femora distinctly pennate especially ventrally, middle tibiae distinctly pennate dorsally, middle femora rather hairy than pennate.
So I am lost! What about you?
