Well, if none of them has been reported in Sardinia, the situation is a lot trickier ;)
There are some European species that I have never seen or been able to study :( Give me a couple of days to study the situation, please. One thing is certain: I have seen
polyphemus in real life and this one fits rather nicely, although I cannot get a real idea of its size.
T. polyphemus is usually a really bulky fly compared to common species as
perspicillaris or
elegans. But size variation is important in most Anthracinae :( (at least here in Spain) and can be deceiving.
See a picture of
T. polyphemus in Spain. On flowers of
Eryngium campestre. That will give you an idea and a reference to compare :) while you wait... ;)
