Hi, Pietro :)

If those two species are the only possibilities of this group of species in Sicilia, it should be polyphemus then :)

Ciao Piluca,
for the keys of Sanchez Terron and Roldan Bravo with "Occipucio amarillo": only polyphemus and nebulosus, wing design more compatible with polyphemus.
For Sardinia both not reported!
Your opinion ...
new report?

Well, if none of them has been reported in Sardinia, the situation is a lot trickier ;)

There are some European species that I have never seen or been able to study :( Give me a couple of days to study the situation, please. One thing is certain: I have seen polyphemus in real life and this one fits rather nicely, although I cannot get a real idea of its size. T. polyphemus is usually a really bulky fly compared to common species as perspicillaris or elegans. But size variation is important in most Anthracinae :( (at least here in Spain) and can be deceiving.

See a picture of T. polyphemus in Spain. On flowers of Eryngium campestre. That will give you an idea and a reference to compare :) while you wait... ;)

Thanks piluca
size about 14/15 mm.
For the Bombilids of Sardinia the checklist of Faunaitalia and Faunaeur are incomplete and not reliable.
