Hi,
Here are some pictures from May 2015, taken in southern Brandenburg. Big black Empis males hunted prey of equal size (Bibio marci, Empis opaca). I got to Empis ciliata and would appreciate confirmation. The species is lacking in the list of Brandenburgian empidids; however, there was another record (https://diptera.i...pid=353869). Many thanks in advance, Sundew

the genitalia matches the drawings in Empidoidea of Fennoscandia and Denmark.

Yep, that's one reason why I arrived at this species. Unfortunately, the book is not displayed completely, so I was not sure if there might be more or less similar characters in other species as well.
Thanks to both of you!

your photos are spectacular! ideal photos which capture the genitalia very nicely.
i wish that i had this book but they are very expensive. I cannot afford to buy all of them. Plus, some of the German species are missing from the book, which complicates the matter. I have Sarcophagidae of Fennoscandia and Denmark if you ever need to see something. pm me and i will try to help.

meantime, i wanted to post yesterday but i am fighting bronchitis and a problem with my arm, so i got sidetracked. sorry.

nice find and very nice photos. I've seen your posts before and you are very accurate with your identifications. the genitalia agrees with your determination quite well.

Best wishes,
John
