Flensburg, N.Germany, 17th August 2018. After a few days of rain which hopefully broke a long drought.
Flew into my kitchen.
Body 10mm, wings 7.5mm
Species ID, if possible. Male or female? Could you let me know what criteria you use for the ID? I'm wanting to learn.
I noticed sparse golden hairs between the thorax bristles.
Thanks in advance
Ray

is the basicosta really black? looks like it could be
Pollenia labialis male.
You can learn how to id Pollenia from the work of Dr. Rognes. The criteria is usually genitalia but not always. The size of most members of the rudis group is 6-10mm.

Thank You John and Nina,
Here are the best images I have of its basicosta. All were taken when he was sitting on the inside window with sunlight shining from behind him so light would have been shining through it. Hope this helps.
I let him go after photographing so can't do better than this.
Have a good day
Ray

I think that
Pollenia cf labialis is okay because the basicosta looks black and the chaetotaxy of the hind tibia appears to be off for P. rudis.
Pollenia rudis is the biggest problem when trying to separate from P. labialis. Both have 2 pv on the foretibia and they generally look the same. Basicosta can be black on P. rudis as well, which poses another problem. I prefer genitalia for this specimen but you let it go.
P. labialis is in its own group, which used to be known as intermedia group.
