Are these tiny diptera Chironomidae?
They measure about 4 mm.
Sorry for the poor quality pictures.
Photographed close to a lake, in Vinhedo city, São Paulo state, Brazil.

By the way, I was looking at your avatar picture... are these phoretic mites? It seems like one of my females is carrying a couple as well... attached in the same place! Is it just a coincidence, or are these places preferred by the mites?

Water mites (Hydrachnidae and related families) are common on Chironomidae. I don't know if their attachment points are random.
