I think I’ve got this one keyed out to Helina but, with muscids especially, I’m never sure. Thanks for the help

found in a suburban office park with trees, a stream, and a pond in the vicinity. Maryland, USA
body length 7-8mm

What is your doubts? If you use Huckett, 1965, the answer will be
Quadrularia laetifica = indeed Helina evecta (a row of hairs on meron is visible on 3rd photo).

Thanks Nikita. BugGuide has only 1 record of that genus so it will be a nice addition (and that ID was DNA based).

By Huckett 1965 do you mean "The Muscidae of Northern Canada, Alaska, and Greenland (Diptera)"? I don't have access to that one and, besides, I wouldn't have guessed that this paper was relevant given that I live maybe a 1000 miles south of the book's subject area.

You asked what are my doubts. Outside of the fact that when I submitted this one 1.5 years ago I knew even less about muscids that I do now, I submit all of my insect records to a biodiversity survey of Maryland (http://www.maryla.../index.php). Unless it's an insect taxon I know well, I try to get expert confirmation before I submit the photos. There's no point in sending them incorrect IDs. I also include the name of the expert who made or confirmed the ID to back up the submission.

Thanks again
Steve
