hello treebeard, yes, i agree, conjecture about size is difficult in the field. i just ask because i suspect a particular species. note the yellow wing base, 5 marginal scutellar setae, black basicosta, dark body, dark abdomen. If i am correct, then you have a rare photo of a Pollenia. Two things bother me: the longitudinal tessellations on the abdomen (supposed to be indicative of semicinerea group) and no clear shot of the hind leg to confirm or eliminate semicinerea group. I see conflicting features to support semicinerea group. I suspect it to be in the amentaria group, which will be only one possibility needing confirmation.

since i only have vague keys and no specimens to work with, i will need a confirmation about my diagnosis. please wait until i recieve an email about this species. I will return here when i have an answer ...
