Pollenia, indeed.

how large is it? do you think 12mm or so? very important to know.

It was smaller than, for example, large Tachinidae, I think 10 - 12 mm. But it is quite difficult to guess.

hello treebeard, yes, i agree, conjecture about size is difficult in the field. i just ask because i suspect a particular species. note the yellow wing base, 5 marginal scutellar setae, black basicosta, dark body, dark abdomen. If i am correct, then you have a rare photo of a Pollenia. Two things bother me: the longitudinal tessellations on the abdomen (supposed to be indicative of semicinerea group) and no clear shot of the hind leg to confirm or eliminate semicinerea group. I see conflicting features to support semicinerea group. I suspect it to be in the amentaria group, which will be only one possibility needing confirmation.

since i only have vague keys and no specimens to work with, i will need a confirmation about my diagnosis. please wait until i recieve an email about this species. I will return here when i have an answer ...

I have an expert opinion which matches my opinion: this fly could be Pollenia vera.

I place it in the amentaria group for the following reasons: yellow wing base, black basicosta, 5 marginal scutellar setae, narrow frons, guessing that the carina is conspicuous based upon experience, one ad on t2 and overall dark-to-black appearance. Of all of the amentaria group, it seems to be the best fit for vera. However, we cannot be 100% certain without genitalia. I have been surprised by Pollenia many times, thus, you must retain a cf with this diagnosis.
