here is a photo also from May of a male fly which I have recently determined to be Phania funesta. I think that this fly does not look like the one in question here. So either my determination is incorrect or this fly of this post is not Phania funesta.

edit: or they are both Phania funesta. The eyes look different but I am not an expert :)
