Is it possible to be sure about the species?

location: Beja, Portugal

I suspect this is geniculatus. There is a very similar species in Portugal - Ochlerotatus echinus, but I believe it flies later in the year. A specimen would make sure!

Thanks Tony. I collected the specimen. I attached a picture of the scutellum, can you tell which species it is?

The scutellar scales are as narrow and as yellow as those on my British geniculatus, so I'd say it is that. Oc.echinus have broader, whiter scales on the scutellum (though I don't have any comparative material here). If you are in woodland with old trees, it's worth catching any similar mosquitoes flying at present - they may well be echinus.

Thank you very much Tony, I'll keep that in mind. :)
