Hi,
This fly c 1-1.5 cm long, seen in coastal sand dunes in N Wales, UK in June 2007. Is it a Xylota sp? Much smaller than X. segnis.

it is like the Chalcosyrphus nemorum
but is better to wait anybody more expert

Eumerus is a difficult genus (at least for me :D), but given the size you mentioned it shouldn't be
E. sabulonum which is about 5-7 mm long.
I can't say more... :(

The location makes me say that it is
sabulonum and that the given size is off.

Since I remember focusing as close as possible to get decent detail, you are almost certainly right Paul, it was probably less than 1cm. Thanks to all for their help.
