Welcome Paul :)
I agree with Eristalis, in the UK I think this would be Eristalis pertinax (due to the yellow tarsi on the front two pairs of legs) and it is a male (eyes meet at top of head).
Someone else will tell us if there are any similar species in Europe outside the UK.
