Hi Chas,

It belongs to the family Dolichopodidae. There are others who will be able to help you to a genus or even species name.

Dolichopus griseipennis

Defining characters for this species are only one strong seta on 1st segment of hind tarsus and an angular bend on M1+2 (3rd long wing vein counting from the leading edge).

Chris

See the discussion on my recent thread http://tinyurl.com/28z264. Yours has the same strong zigzag M vein, but I suspect is a different species to mine (I think the leg bristles and antennae are not quite the same, but a bit difficult to tell). Presumably could well be Dolichopus sp though.

Aha - so it is the same species as mine! Taken at much the same time of year, and not all that far apart geographically, so makes sense.
